  • Hold Fast is command given to the ship’s crew for them to hold on to a solid fitting, such as ropes or rails, to avoid being swept overboard, especially during a storm. It means to “hold tight” or “grip firmly,” originating from the Dutch term “houd vast,”.  Hold fast is an idiom which per Wiktionary, means, “To stubbornly resist assault, pressure or opposition, either physically or mentally.”  Ie. stand one’s ground or stay the course.  However, stubborn resistance is not illogical, rather is an adherence to conviction, reminding one to maintain perseverance, composure, and be steadfast when we confront challenging obstacles and to weather the storm.  It is about a lack of fear and unwavering strength.  Through challenges, we can remain true to principles, and have tenacity to withstand difficult times, Wikipedia, discussing sailors’ superstitions, notes that sailors historically would tattoo the words ‘HOLD FAST’ on their knuckles to prevent them from falling aloft. This trend is seen in our modern times with the words hold fast tatted on knuckles in Sailor Jerry font.
